When I was a teenager I slept on the living room of our house to serve as "guard." I also felt more comfy lying down on our soft living room sofa and was able to sleep well there. But the problem was when the lights were put out and everything was pitch black--well, except for some spots in the living room where a weak beam of light filtered through from the electric post outside. A Night Updater scenario.
The dim side of the house was something I'd rather not look at during the night. You hear all kinds of eerie sounds when the lights are off, and your mind starts to wonder in that darkness. And cats seem more aware of some things outside, in the shadows. You often see them staring out the window wide eyed. I kept my cat inside the house to keep me company--but you know how cats are. Their eyes are a hundred times sharper. They see things.
My dogs weren't much help either. They just sniffed the air and took cover under the tables. Good that they never howled like the dogs in our neighborhood at midnight. It was scary hearing them while you're all alone in the dark and quiet living room. It was tough having to check all the doors and windows before sleeping time and having to switch off the fuse box and then go back to the sofa and sleep. You see all kinds of shadows around you. Talk about the dim side of sleeping at night.
Then it happened. I was drifting off to sleep one night when suddenly I was awakened by scratching on the window right in front of me! When I opened my eyes, there it was--a hulking shadow waving its arms angrily at me! It's got afro curly hair and long arms that looked like tentacles against the light of the street electric post. I froze, and I thought my heart stopped beating. What should I do now? I asked myself. Calling out to my dad was a definite no-no! He was a bit old and he hated the idea of me seeing monsters in the dark.

Then I heard the monster call out my name. "He knows my name?" I asked myself. And his voice seemed more like pleading than angry. When I opened my eyes and stared at it longer, I realized it was my older brother, home from a late night drinking spree. He was pleading me to open the back door and not to be noisy lest dad woke up. I was able to breathe better then and was glad to have him company in the living room for that night. And in a way, that started my quest as a Night Updater.
